Understood. When I say "what it should and shouldn't contain" I mean you can
infer from what it does contain what people decided it shouldn't contain.
I realize the standard reflects consensus, which is one of the things most
valuable about a standard, even though it means things may be left out
because not everyone agreed. It doesn't mean those omissions wouldn't have
been good.

Yes, I would like to know of a reference implementation if it exists.

The reason I am thinking about implementing it myself is to implement it
myself. Quite simple, really!

I haven't estimated it, much less underestimated it. The best part is I can
always give up ;-) I don't think the code generation is going to be
difficult. I think making a usable Forth that has practical value on the
targets is going to be the hard part, it will require a lot of system
interface and extensions and that's a lot of code.

I don't have any experience with Forth. Like Rod, I thought to gain some
understanding of Forth by building my own implementation (on uncommon
targets that I use for other work) as I go. I like the simplicity of Forth,
the stack approach, and the building up of code from small functional
bits. It's a neat system that is not very common.

I don't believe I have anything to offer an existing team as I'm not aware
of anything being written for my targets. One could probably port Forth
implementations written in C to one of those targets more or less easily,
but if I do anything most if not all the work will be in assembly. At the
end of the day it really doesn't matter because I don't see this being a
commercial success or commerically viable at all. It wouldn't compete with
any other offering I'm aware of. It's more about a learning experience for
me on machines I like working on than anything else. I like to do my own
projects to learn this or that. Thanks for your post.
