I don't know exactly, but for some reason I'm not happy with the concept of local variables in Forth. It's for me like a "hotfix" to have something like this. Chuck Moore doesn't like locals either. TO is also used with VALUEs, but what if TO and VALUE were not implemented? You would tend to use VARIABLEs instead, which is like molding in soft clay instead of hard clay. You would also be denied your locals crutch. -Brad
