That would need to be supported by the CPU directly, no? In essence the CPU would have to know how many stack items are in registers and call the appropriate microcode to execute the appropriate primitive. Otherwise how would the compiler know what to expect when a word is compiled into another word? Given that any word can be called my a number of other words, how can a compiler know what is happening at run time? I'm not entirely clear on the context of this use of stack caching. Normally this is a technique used to facilitate the use of multiple registers in a standard CPU. The trick is to know when to adjust the stack item count in registers and when such an adjustment would be counter productive. It would not be unreasonable to keep in registers more items than typically needed by any one word and only adjust when required. So hysteresis could facilitate this. If a stack push is needed when the register count is already at max does a flush of n items. A stack pop when the register usage count is at the minimum does a cache fill. But how can a standard CPU know when to do this? Either the CPU needs to have hardware support for this, which standard CPUs don't have, or extra instructions are required for every stack operation to check the register usage count. Am I missing something? If stack caching doesn't always keep the same number of items in registers, how can a standard CPU keep track of when to fill and flush? -- Rick C
