I have looked at what others have done but have very little information
on how they made their choices. For example, does anyone have any
regression tests that illustrates the issues of stacks?

I guess what is modest hardware size. How big is needed to accommodate most
applications given that a user or compiler makes a reasonable attempt to
write good code.

Most massively recursion pathological cases can generally be optimized
away for example.
