Thanks for posting the slide set describing SC20. It is pretty much as
described and would be competitive with many of the 32 bit processors
out there.

One thing that I have discovered looking at many ISA's has been the
designers often panic during the design process when they find a
sequence that is particularly inefficient. They fix the sequence with
ISA changes that have small amounts of almost invisible loss of bit
efficiency or higher execution times. Many cases they would be better
off taking the efficiency hit on rarely used corner cases.

In designing an ISA it is important to have a very good understanding of
the intended applications. One of the processors that I worked on the
ISA and wrote a supporting tool set we actually wrote two code
generators targeting different application area's. We actually ship both
variations of the compiler either will compile code intended for the
other application area the difference is the 2 or 3% difference in code
size and execution time. It was this project that we started looking at
formalized approaches early strategy passes in the compiler extracting
data and control flow as being almost as important as comprehensive
optimization.
