You don't need to change the entire language to use bytes to store flags. c! will store a TRUE as all ones. c@ will retrieve a value of 255 on the stack. This will be treated as a TRUE as long as you don't use it for anything but logic before you use it as logic. If you want to store a value of 1 in the bytes so you can later count them, then store them this way. 1 AND c! By changing your entire Forth to use 1/0 as logic values you lose the ability to use an arbitrary value as a flag. In ANS Forth any value that is not zero is treated as a TRUE by any function that evaluates a logic flag. So a flag and a value ANDed together will give you a TRUE if the value is not zero and the flag is TRUE or FALSE if either the value is zero or the flag is FALSE. Just as you can use a flag as a mask to perform logic on a value leaving at its present value or setting it to zero which is what is done in the example of the ascii char conversion. : >CHAR ( [0,15] -- char ) DUP 9 > 7 AND + [CHAR] 0 + ; Someone threw around the term "idiomatic".
