We use benchmarks largely as a test to refocus us outside the expected application area. They often (Actually very often) exercise corner cases. The metrics that we look at with great interest is the reference designs that are often created as we develop tools (and ISA's). The concept that we are creating general purpose computers for anything has largely passed. The Laptop my wife uses is very much designed to do the things she does that requires good fast video processing and most need a good video co-processor. I do a lot of simulation and a little bit of image displays. The gamers mentioned elsewhere have different computing needs. There are some application specific benchmarks for each of these area's and they help selecting a suitable personal computer. Running the benchmarks that my wife would use is unlikely to help me much in making my choice. w..
