Better code yes from register allocators. Part of this is a delusion as
well. The goal often was to have faster context switches and for various
reasons that didn't materialize. RAM fragmentation became a problem.
After the promising generalizations and promises register windows when
it came to details they didn't work very well. The idea has been around
since at least the 70's with the TI9900.
