There are many systems that don't have stacks supported by the processor 
hardware. The IBM S/360 and its successors are one example. Its 
instruction set has no equivalent of the x86 PUSH and POP. The standard 
calling convention (the S-type linkage) uses doubly linked lists. The 
caller provides a register save area for the callee's use.

Of course, one could create a synthetic stack by using a register 
pointer to memory, but it would require the register to be additionally 
incremented or decremented after a load or store.
