I used 256 word stacks in my CPU design, but this makes the stack 
pointers longer than desirable and slowed the design.  Actually, it was 
the flags on the stack addresses that were the long pole in the tent, 
but they had to go through the entire address carry chain and so were 
limited by the stack pointer length.  I probably should have tossed the 
flags.

I used 256 word stacks because they shared a single dual port block RAM 
with 512 words.  If I go back to this design I will likely use a larger 
hunk of memory and do the rotation context thing to use multiple virtual 
machines where the stack RAM holds N smaller stacks for N virtual CPUs. 
RAM is cheap on FPGAs usually.
