Reminds me of doing some laser repair in grad school. It was an oldish excimer, and after taking off the cover the next step was to discharge stored energy in the magnetron. This was done by shorting across two points with a longish metal shaft. When it went off I almost pooped my pants. This reminds me of a tale one of my organic profs told when I was an undergrad. Apparently, when he was an undergrad himself, he (and a couple of co-conspirators) had taken a sizeable (fist sized) chunk of sodium and tossed it into the Charles River.
