I always liked that one better than Tom Sawyer Same here. Tom Sawyer was sort of a kids book. But Huck Finn was a lot darker and grittier. Death, alcoholism, the dark side of slavery, real lethal feuds, rural ignorance. Superstition and religion all mixed up. Nothing quite like it in English Literature - our writers of that time were Dickens and so on documented the urban poverty, Shades of it in 'Larks Rise to Candleford' but that was 50 years later -- Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend.
