Minimum chip count is the goal in almost every case and you have to work with what you have. Yes, there is plenty of choice, but in practice, limitations in internal peripheral set, development tool availability / quality and cost etc narrow the range considerably. Embedded peripherals are getting smarter, with some having peripheral h/w support for linked list buffered dma, for example, but demanding that sort of capability does limit the choice of processor to a usually higher cost item. It also increases the software design complexity and cost. In almost every case simple interrupt driven hardware gets the job done with less complexity and allows the use of a cheaper processor. The fact that most (all ?) embedded cpus are designed from the start to be heavily interrupt driven only confirms this. This has been true ever since the days of 6502. As for the right way to do it, there is no universal right way and the trick is to balance all the parts of the picture to get the best solution.. Regards, Chris
