What's not independent about concurent users of mmap'd files or sysV shmem APIs? You could argue that the fact that such programs are capable of understanding one another through such interfaces means that they are, in a sense, related, but they can definitely be completely independent processes, with their own VM space, own executable, even own user IDs.
