In my own conversation with Nick he said something about UNIX signals. Perhaps this is what he means, or should mean: * UNIX signal handlers are, in some ways, an attempt to make a facility like asynchronous interrupts available to user code * UNIX signal handlers are not a terribly big success. At times people have said that the only thing you can reliably do in a signal handler is exit the program without printing an error message. That is an exaggeration - I use signals on a regular basis to monitor long running simulations. But I think it is fair to say that signals don't live up to what one might hope. Obviously, interrupts work well enough, since pretty much all modern computers use them. But this is at OS level. But interrupt like facilities for user programs have never quite taken off.
