I overlooked that most opcodes included addressing. A series of 16 bit add from memory instructions could overlap the math part with the addressing for the next instruction. But again it is clear from the instruction cycle times that this is not done. I think someone mentioned that it was planned, but the combination explosion of checking which instructions could overlap was too hard? If the 68000 had any embedded marketshare outside of Moto products it would appear that there would be a huge opportunity to build an improved clone. Like has been done for the 8051 and other chips. The 68020 is a huge chip by comparison, as such it does not compete in the same market as an improved 68000 would. I looked up the ColdFire v1 and v2 timings and while better than 68000 there is no sign of pipelining or instruction overlap. (Maybe I missed it.)
