Now, if you want to take real interrupts, in my <not so> humble opinion, periferal processors are a rather good solution--leave the low level codes run out near the device registers they access anyways, and only interrupt the main CPUs when the RUN queue has new state and requires some actively running task to be switched. Given a small in order CPU out in the SouthBridge chip to take all the device interrupts that runs the native instruction set, the OS does not even have to be reprogrammed, just set up a few tables differently.
