No challenge if the job is easy enough though. I had a weird board that did a "serial port" via one input and one output of a parallel port. Writing a "software UART" isn't hard, but you'd better not have anything else for the CPU to worry about. Even easier constraints was using the off-hook relay in an Apple serial card to do autodialing (only worked on old phone exchanges). This is like the old trick of using the physical off-hook switch to dial on old dial phones. As for polling loops, they can be a good answer. The Myrias IOP had a board set called the "TXV" which had 4 banks of memory which could be switched between the Myrias COM links and the hosting VME bus. The only work the TXV had to do was to pass messages between the Myrias COM and the main VME memory in the system, run by the CPU on a single board computer plugged in. I had control over the shared memory protocol between the TXV and the SBC, and wrote all the code involved. I used a polling loop on the TXV to do all of its work. The key was that the timing of COM messages was fairly consistent, and there were only the 4 ports and the shared memory interface to worry about. I don't think I even bothered using the serial port once the code was working - a row of LEDs was easier. -- -Chris Gray
