This use was an extended, later add-on, exposing a lot of unintended challenges. The Z80 was. And the 6809. But not the earlier 68xx's nor the 65xx chips. But nearly all of them got an OS. Until well after the 80386 the chip makers and the software guys worked in pretty isolated realms; only the compiler makers had a somewhat close relationship to the chip people. The "hobbyist" crowd was just a sideshow for the chip makers until pretty late. The main game was huge volumes for clocks, washing machines, calculators etc. With Open Source this was also the case until the magical year 2004; when the process control people had their "year of the penguin". Several related industries changed to Linux in a single year. Automotive, Rail, Alarms etc. They just dithced their homegrown stuff and/or made it work in user space on Linux. Now the installed Linux+BSD systems outnumber everything else by an order of magnitude. Chip makers have taken notice. -- mrr
