Certainly, that's a typical phase conflict. Register allocation is usually dumb about latencies; while there is some work in that direction, I don't think it is used much in production compilers, nor has there been much followup research. One reason is that first RISCs and later OoO made this look not very relevant. And my guess is that this kind of code is rare enough that a typical evaluation (i.e., use the compiler on standard benchmarks) would show little benefit from addressing such things. - anton -- M.
