I don't know much about dmesg, but I can boot a linux w/o the 
radeon.audio = 1 parameter and not have operational digital, but have a 
correctly recognized digital device that doesn't work in linux and try 
to see what you are talking about.

But it seems that we need some evidence that BDB's Dell actually *has* a 
digital device and especially nice to know what it is, rather than just 
knowing:

  - linux doesn't and Win does play case audio
  - the Dell has HDMI audio not connected which is digital

That makes me what to see what Win knows in its device manager rather 
than what linux may think is confusing it.  The case speakers *are* 
connected even if the HDMI is not.

Well, of course, knowing both (Win devices & linux dmesg confusion) is 
even more valuable :-)
