Apparently the ID report of the device is misleading.
Previously BDB (Boater David Brooks) posted an inxi -A from LM 22 Cinn:

But if all of that were correct, we wouldn't be having this trouble.
There is also some kind of discrepancy between what linux reports on my
ThinkPad and what W10 says. At first I was having trouble figuring out
the way W10 reports the chip-ID in the device manager compared to the
format that linux uses, but I think I have it figured now, so tomorrow
I'm going to compare those two reports here.
Linux plays sound on the ThinkPad via the headset, not the speakers;
which also don't 'click' either :-)
W10 makes audio properly w/ both.
