I realize that, and again, that's why this is a hidden preference. If
Apple chose to expose it to users, they'd make corresponding changes to
the preferences panel. Hidden settings are there for power users who
know what they are doing and aren't intended for the majority who only
use the GUI.

Hopefully the idea is to confuse novice users as little as possible.
