Well - the storm wouldn't "take out" the satellites, but even particularly heavy rain (and certainly sleet) could easily increase the path-loss enough to make communication with them untenable. I did some googling on this. The northern location we are at makes quite a diffence here. Geostationary satellites have theoretical coverage up to 81 degrees. But at 78 the link is very marginal, you have ~20 times the travel path through athmosphere being that more exposed to storm fades. This is the location of the northernmost city in the world, Longyearbyen. The north cape of the mainland is at 71, which still makes satellite communication pretty marginal. You need them in a ~50 degree window east-west, preferrably within ~20. And the antennas on the satellite point further south, where all the customers are. This means that we need real parabolas, not the qute panel antennas the ~$1500 "cheap" handsets come with. You need to get down to ~60 (Oslo, Bergen) before satellites are as dependable as we ae told they are further south; but we still need more antennas. We are right at the edge of the lobe for e.g. Globalstar, which covers us up to around 65 degrees, i.e. leaving out 2/3rds of the country. Even at 60 we still have ~5 times the atmosperic path as someone at 20 or closer to the equator. -- mrr from "up over" :-)

We also have one territory where the geostationary satellite is maximum 3.5 degrees above the horizon. You don't need much of a mountain to block the view. It if is a few degrees east of west you are often talking of 1.5 degrees elevation; and then the athmosphere path becomes suffciently long to be exposed to a lot of weather. The mobile network up there has been upgraded to run without power or service techs for three years. That requires a LOT of low octane gas. (Diesel would freeze. Natural gas would liquify.). And the winter darkness lasts from mid november til early february. They have got fiber to the mainland now, too. -- mrr

Sure, but that gives a much more reliable comms network than is ever going to be possible using SW or maritime VHF and has the massive advantage that far more already have what is necessary to use it and can power that stuff any way they like, including in their cars and with other propane powered generators if that is what they want to have. > (Diesel would freeze. Doesn't matter. Unless it's liquid at below atmospheric pressure it still works--the pressure is maintained by the gas itself you know and the gas in the free space above the liquid is what you draw off and burn.

There is always some longer hydrocarbons in the propane mix. Even a 5% mixin of butane will drop the vapor pressure by several hundred millibar at -30C. That is a lot when you don't have a lot to start with. Propane does not exactly boil very vigourously at ~10 degrees above boiling point. -- mrr

No, but the upper sixties (minus 60-65 C) are known to happen, but quite rarely. Normal winter temperatures are -10 to -40, but with a very large warming the last decade. The stuff that is sold as natural gas here is dominated by Propane (boiling point -40C), but also contain some Butane(0C) and Pentane(+36C). Yes, there is a small part of Methane in it, but it is less than 10% by mass. Not good enough to depend on up there. I was CTO of a largish ISP in the dotcom boom. Getting international capacity was a huge challenge, so we went for load balancing a few terrestrial lines with a really big satellite link. Being big (6m dish, 6kW transmit permit, usually lay aroung 500W) it had to be tuned. All the time. Having exact polarisation in sync with the satellite (and that tended to wobble a bit) was essential, as was tuning the up and down effects. The down effect was set in the satelite, but we had to set the up effect. After a few hundred phone calls from the satellite ops we built some servos for the transmit effect knob (yes, it was literally a knob, we attached a rubber band and connected it to a simple stepper motor) as well as the polarisation lever on the antenna. Connected both to some simple computer, and gave the satellite ops some instruction and accounts; as well as priority on the landlines. They loved it. We got up to 300 megabits down and up to 150 up, but this was for emergency use. We usually ran around 80/30. (this was 1995-99). We got real fiber in late 1999; and then the satellite dish was kept as a backup uplink to the places that were still exposed to old style international connections. Bosnia was one of them. So were Azerbadjan and Georgia. It was disconnected in june 2002, having served it's purpose. -- mrr
