The harder problem is keeping all those panels clean, the car exhaust fumes (which have to be allowed to escape from under the roof) will drop crud all over them - cars spit their worst crud at startup. Besides the northeast, where we get about three full days of sunlight a year ;-) you have places up north that get almost no sunlight for half the year. The southwest gets lots of sunshine, but also dust storms that would mess up solar panels, etc. People who live in San Diego, or whatever, might think solar is a great idea, but I'd rather have something more reliable, like a good nuke. -- Pete

The Germans have gone in for solar panels recently[0] (After planning to shut down their nuclear plants), many large new buildings are covered in them, when my daughter was thinking of getting them on her roof, I asked her to see how those who installed them in the 1970's had got on, quite a few had not replaced theirs when they needed replacement. In winter, there could be 3-4' of snow soaked with rain and then frozen. There was one time when I didn't get the 6" of slush cleared from my driveway. I ended up with 4" of ice with a surface so slippery I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get from the stoop steps to the car in garage. It took a long time for that mess to melt. And that was a mild storm in New England. /BAH

I did it several times when heating oil was going up a lot. Heating oil businesses bought oil that way. They took delivery in early fall; fall is the last time oil can be delivered. /BAH

In the US there has "always" been a quite firm limit for all low frequency radio to stay below 50kW. There are some exceptions, but they are few, and none are for purely commercial stuff. Not quite as strict in Canada, or Mexico. But 50kW on a tall tower will cover several states to saturation. Even a 50W (rookie ham limit) could cover a state or two. You would need some better antennas for the reception, though. -- mrr

It's doable with a gasoline or diesel generator. Even from Home Depot (you can get an 8kW wheelbarrow-size generator for $1K or so). That should be enough power for regional coverage. There are probably some in the neighborhood already. Iif your mains power is flakey, some homeowners will have their own, otherwise a local contractor will probably have a bigger one sitting on a truck. And some local commercial sites (e.g. hospitals) will have large standby generators already. Over a long term, fuel might be an issue, though.

Obviously depends on how powerful the AM transmitter is. They normally have their own generators and there is normally only the one of them for each transmitter. It isn't hard to do those robustly enough so they survive anything.

Thus you can get solar panels that are small but which will charge up a few battery operated things. And since they are small, they can easily be oriented. In an emergency, you live with what you have. I found a hand cranked radio some years back, which is AM/FM and the audio from tv channels (no longer useful) and it has the channels for the weatherstations. Not a very good receiver, but I can crank it and get reception. But a small solar panel would be really useful. Charge the FRS walkie talkies that have better weather channel reception. Charge the 2M walkie talkie so I could actually talk to someone. Charge the MP3 player and the various shortwave portables I have. I try to keep spare batteries around, but not all of these use AA or AAA batteries. And since emergencies don't happen very often, I may not keep everything charged properly. But if the power went off, it would be nice to be able to keep listening to such things. Michael

SOme of the ideology never went away, just less visible, but I gather there's sort of a comeback now with the "younger generation". I've seen comments locally where they claim to have invented it all, yet I can point to it all happening before. IN the old days, some of the magazine was a bit too much counterculture hype, I think early in the run they used up their quota of exclamation marks, but other things were interesting, and it was a howto magazine, just aligned along other lines.
