Yes. Also about "self sufficiency", so lots of articles about "I started
my own paperback book store" and things like that.

The thrust was "back to the land" but I suspect away from the city people
were able to build cheaper, there being fewer restrictions. So all those
domes that leaked, you weren't likely to see that in a city. So they
could save money by building their homes themselves, but also save money
by unusual architecture and reusing scrap from elsewhere.

In 1982 I was walking through Vermont, and I was inside a few homes that
were designed from the ground up for solar power. It is easier to build
such homes from scratch than trying to retrofit existing homes. These
were passive solar homes, big tanks of water to collect the heat, I don't
remember much in the way of solar cells.

We're now seeing a lot of solar panels in odd places. I suppose it
initially looks like "hey we're saving electricty" but then I realize it's
a way of not needing to be close to electricity. So all those public bike
stations we have now, those are powered by solar panels. They aren't
permanent installations, they come down in the fall and may not be in the
same place the next year, so solar power means they don't have to dig up
the ground to access electricity lines. Same with the new parking meters
that just went in, more like occasional terminals, you find one and pay
there for your space. But they could put the "terminals" where they felt
the need, rather than where they could get electricity.

I have a couple of `ordinary' solar panels, connected to old car batteries,
and several security lights. Being solaar powered, you can put them in
unexpected places wires would be hard to install.

You don't need much of a stream to generate a few hundred watts more or
less continously. There are lots of good 3D printer designs for simple
turbines too.

Not everyone needs them. And most can charge them using their car.

That's a lie on the good angle.

You should have 12V chargers for all emergency equipment. Then you
can run them in a car it you have to. With a full tank you have ~20
hours or more of idling with the generator working. If you pace it
you should be able to draw 5A from a car battery with intermittent
charging for almost a week.

For some hurricanes I have been though, the power was out for 2 weeks.
But it would indeed work for short term outages.

A car used as a source of ~60W of power constantly would last for
somewhat more than a week. And you can ration it out, making it last
a month with 4 hours of 50W lighting in the evenings, and a constant
battery charger load on 5-10W.

I bought a 140A 12V charger that runs on gasoline, army surplus.
Cheap, too.

It charges a car battery from 20% to 80% in less than half an hour.
And uses a little more than 2.5 liters per hour. I keep around 20
liters in the garage, and in an emergency I can siphon a similar amount
from the car.

If I use two batteries worth per day I can last more than two weeks.

Knowing that this municipality has a single row of pylons for all
electricity supply I do take measures.

I have a hand-cranked flashlight that can charge my cell phone.

Time to break out the exercise bicycle and cobble a generator onto it...

Isn't that about what Lee Felsenstein has been working on in recent times?
I guess it's for computers, but I seem to recall bicycle generators being
part of the mix.

The military have used bicycle and hand-crank generators since the '30s.
Later (1980s) hand crank ones make good battery chargers, but are
usually 24V. During WW2 SOE had several generators that could fit on
a typical French bicycle.

I have a hand-crank one so I can operate on all frequencies from 2Mhz
to 79Mhz indefinitely with my ex-army kit.

Genrator or solar power. There are some small solar arrays now. Not
cheap, but they fold up and are easily portable. I know one person who
takes one on his hiking trips.

First, I wouldn't buy it from Harbour Freight. The ones another ham

Solar panels on the roof will allow most people to light their homes and
run TVs & radios when the power grid fails. Possibly even a microwave
oven and phone hand set. 1kW may be sufficient for this.

Running high power equipment like vacuum cleaners, room heaters, water
heaters, lifts, electric ovens and electric kettles would require
considerably more power.

So you charge the batterys with whatever
you like, like the car or a generator.

> There will be no recharging until the power grid is up.

Wrong. Our mining exploration uses them all the
time, there is no mains power where they operate.
Plenty of vehicles that charge the batterys fine.

> The whole point of doing a radio broadcast is to disseminate

And so it makes sense to use all of TV, AM and FM radio
for that because almost everyone has receivers for them
and very large numbers of those are in cars etc which work
fine for listening to the radio even if the mains power is out.

But that isnt possible by using SW,

But is useless for 2 way communications. Sat phones in the hands
of the people that matter like cops, the military and fire etc etc
etc leaves SW for dead for that. That's why the military uses it.

A story, dunno if its true. Meeting of whatever group of people the
US has install in Kabul, some proposal, one of the people suggest
asking the opposition what they would think of it, so they adjourn
to the garden, call the opposition spokesman by sat phone, and discuss.

An international business man had a stud farm locally, and would visit,
go down the field to look at the mares, business man, studfarm manager,
sat-phone wallah.

The same is true for any other radio system.

Part of preparing for a storm is to have spare batteries.

I do see your point. It is better to have one big transmitter and a lot
of low power receivers, than everyone being able to transmit too.

A centralized newscast means most people will get the news directly,
instead of a garbled version passed along, which might end up like a game
of "broken telephone". If you want to control information, you have to be
sure to release that information, and be a reliable source of information.
Then the stuff that gets passed on is more likely to be closer to the
truth.

And as you said in a previous message, when an emergency comes along, the
radio stations can be really helpful. When we had the Big Ice Storm here
in 1998, a lot of people without power for varying amounts of time, one
commercial station and the CBC station went to cover it all the time, with
lots of chance for people to call in. So instead of people sitting at
home alone, they were able to hear from others in the same situation.
it was actually a rather cozy thing, lying in the dark, covered up in all
the quilts I had, I couldn't power a tv set but I could listen endlessly
to the radio.

ANy time there was important news, the station could provide it, but
probably the listeners kept listening because of the "talk format", so
they'd be around to hear any important news.

Most of the time power outages are local. Announcing it means local
officials aren't swamped with calls, and it also ensures that people
aren't at home thinking "it must be just me". A few years ago there were
some local but long (much of the day) power outages, in one case a gas
leak and they had to turn off the power. You initially think "it will
come back soon" and you keep waiting, and then it's too late to make plans
to get out and do something or find some hot food. Radio is really
important at such times.

And that prevented any kind of cabin fever.

Exactly. Allowing the callers to do most of the talking is
essential. The station here has 2 hours of it each weekday
morning. I don't know how long it will last because the host
has to be able to know how to chair a meeting without
dominating the disucssions. That self-confidence seems to be rare
in radio show hosts.
