Clouds reduce the efficiency of the light that reaches the solar panels, but the panels will still generate power, just not as much as without the clouds. The sun shines regardless of the weather, or it would be pitch black. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_Michigan

To keep a transmitter that size up 24 x 7 would require a continuous supply of about 3.6 MWh per day (150 kW). Based on NREL data for Boston, you have an annual average of 4.6 hours of "full sunlight equivalent" per day, but for the darker months (December, e.g.) it goes down to 1.9 hour-equivalents per day. So -- at 1.9 hour-equivalent a day, to get 3.6 MWh of output, you need 1.9 MWp of panels. (Get out your checkbook). The upside is -- for the 11 months a year when you produce far more than you're consuming, you can sell the excess to MG&E, so there's a long-paying dividend there. Selecting a random mitsubishi panel off the net, one gets about 150 Wp per square meter of panel area. 12,600 square meters (3 acres) of solar panels would meet 100% of their power needs. (Add to that MPPT conveters, inverters, and several tons of battery). Not impossible, but certainly not practical. On the flip side -- operating a station that size off a diesel generator would be fall-off-a-log easy. A 150 kW plant would burn about 40 kg of fuel per hour - just shy of a tonne per day. I can't find wholesale prices for Boston fuel oil, but retail it is selling for about US $2.15 per gallon - which works out to about US$670/ton -- so figure if you're buying 100 tons at a shot, you're gonna get that down to $575 or less. --NK1G

Just to complicate things even more, the 50 kW she mentions is effective radiated power, not 60 Hz AC input. We need someone with practical knowledge to convert that into kWHr. Are there some useful rules of thumbs for commercial AM stations in the USA?

First -- US AM stations are licensed for power at the feedpoint, not ERP. The ERP will be slightly less, based on the specific antenna design. For older transmitters like the venerable RCA Ampliphase you have about 2.5 watts in for every watt out -- and a very large radiator for the cooling water. Modern Nautel transmitters are REMARKABLY efficient -- a brand new NX series will require about 1.25 watts in for every watt of RF out.

We need someone with practical knowledge >to convert that into kWHr. Are there some useful rules of thumbs for >commercial AM stations in the USA? The figure of 3:1 in diesel generator power vs radiated power seems like a reasonable one. I only have experience with smaller, and digital or FM transmissions, but these are never quite down to 2:1 in battery power; and diesel needs a bigger headroom for stuff like load angle/cos(phi), peak loading at certain frequencies etc. You will also need some energy for the sources, but 2-3 kW should suffice in an emergency. With state-of-the-art economic transmitters and ideal antennas I can see around 2.4:1 from batteries, but YMMV. Conditions are never ideal. Come to think of it, I would budget a ~200kW diesel for a 50kW signal, but only run it at ~70% load; there are large losses in such systems. The 40 kgs of diesel (which is closer to 50 liters) seems to have such stuff in the budget. At data centers we budget around 250 liters/hour for a megawatt diesel; the figures above seem to be a little beyond 150kW. (We do slight underestimation because we always have bad cos(phi) that is taken up by the UPSes.) -- mrr

I got that 40 kg number by assuming 240 g / kWh and then rounding up to the nearest Renard number) Running backwards from your numbers, (assuming 850 g/liter for #2 Diesel) 250 liter/hour = 213 g/kWh -- substantially less than my assumption. And I see where I went wrong -- memory fault -- 240 g/kWh is a much more likely number for gasoline than diesel -- the BSFC page at Wikipedia gives (sourced) examples much closer to your numbers than mine.

We do underestimate a little; because we run plants where the kW are ~85% of the kVAs. The reason is that we have lots of lots of stuff where the load does not follow the voltage around the sine cycle. Small 1U servers are the worst. (See; I brought this back to computing) But around 250 liters per MVA per hour is about what we use; or a trifle less. We don't get a full megawatthour from that. The diesels used to generate a megawatt will be rated to ~1300 kW. There are lots of losses here. How is load from an AM transmitter? Leading, trailing, and how close does it follow voltage? (I would guess leading, because there are bound to be some large capacitors that will take an inrush when the voltage swing up again). -- mrr

For a MODERN one (the Nautel I mentioned upstream) PF is 0.95 (I assume leading). For the old amplifuzz - I couldn't say ... I've never actually snuggled up to one personally, and the pal I had who did frequently has gone SK.

IME, purchasing oil as a consumer in New England is a bit like buying oil futures. The fuel oil delivery businesses do buy futures and pass the option to the customers on a seasonal basis. Otherwise a customer pays the retail price on the date of delivery. /BAH

That's what they did here at a major shopping center -- EVERYONE gets to park in the shade, and they generate hundreds of MWh per year of 'green' power.

Question: How well does such a roof hold up against a storm of
the types that have been mentioned?
If it does not work, then what about making the carpark
underground and having the roof at ground surface or nearly so (enough
slanty bits or whatever to keep the snow from sticking)?
Sincerely,

Two full size ice rinks underground, apparently a new or relatively new thing. There is a building above ground, but it's much smaller than the one that housed the previous 1.5 ice rinks (one was smaller than the other). So there's much more grass in that area. No solar panels, though. Michael
