It was only four years later, reading a New York Times review of Myra Friedman's "Buried Alive" about Janis that I realized that was the rock star that died that day. But 46 years before 1970, it wsa 1924, which is the distant past. If you think about Janis's interest in Bessie Smith, she died in 1937, much closer to Janis's time than Janis's death is to now. I had the impression Bessie Smith had faded, except in relatively small circles, while Janis Joplin has stayed on the record racks all this time, even if she's faded a bit from view. Michael

We know he died, but not really much about his death other than it was an overdose. The trilogy died off in 70 and 71, that was a big thing. Dying later meant you had some sort of survival ability. So when Bob Hite of Canned Heat died about 1981, it's less spectacular (and he was then older) even though he'd somehow managed to keep with the drugs after many moved on. Jerry Garcia lasted till 1995 (except for that near death in the eighties, when he was in a coma for a bit), which is downright a long life. Paul Butterfield died in 1987, late compared to Michael Bloomfield's death in 1981. Now, the old rock stars are dying of cancer. Actually, a whole lot o9f people who have died in recent years that I've taken notice of, it was cancer. Sadly if you're a musician and die of something other than drugs, you get forgotten. It was heroin, but she seems to have kicked it, then returned to it. She was then maybe more vulnerable to an overdose, since her threshold had been lowered. A lot of those cases, they had people around who didn't say anything, or outright supplied them. So they had a harder time avoiding it. Heroin seems relatively safe, in a controlled situation. It's the street stuff that is diluted to a varying extent is a problem, people not knowing how potent they are getting, but also if you dont' have money, you have to do bad things to pay for the habit, and you aren't likely living a healthy life. Though even successful rock stars like David Crosby suffered, spending way too much and losing a lot as a result, though not his life. Herbert Huncke, associated with the Beats, was once described as the "world's oldest junkie", somehow able to keep up the habit without dying. Michael

And I don't think it was that she kept the company going by her drinking, but that she was vocal about it, so the bottle was prominent and thus she became a valuable "spokesman" for the company.
