Syrian people are being killed by war, oppression and murder in their own country, and by unsafe migration. Stopping those problems would help save lives. >> Just last night I saw on Sky News another three children were pulled >> dead from the sea. IIRC they were just 4 and 6 years old. No, making people safe is not punishing them. Just the opposite. I said "adequate" to emphasise that I was talking about basic but sufficient conditions, and not luxury. Some form of employment sounds like a good idea. It would give people an opportunity to do something to contribute to the system under which they live. >> * Take in the refugees who are the most needy directly from the >> refugee camps as the UK is doing. Those who want to migrate for economic reasons should be treated in line with the country's existing policies. At the moment the great tide of people coming into Europe is a mix of refugees, economic migrants and terrorists. The latter two groups are pretty much indistinguishable from genuine refugees. ... >> * Work on the causes of the war that is driving people away from >> Syria so that they can return home. > > So, corral, return? Is that humane? No, I was saying that there needs to be a solution to the problem that is causing the Syrian exodus. It is surely right (and affordable) to protect and help the relatively few who have a genuine need. But I don't believe it is right to allow economic migrants and others to bypass normal immigration procedures on the back of a wave of human migration. James
