I don't think functional programming is any "harder" than, say, OO programming, imperative style programming, Horn clause logic, what not. It's just a question of education, i. e. good teaching, but not of inherent difficulty. Java-programmers-are-stupid had nothing to do with the decisions taken in Project Lambda. But it has always been clear that Java was not to be made into a functional programming language. Nevertheless, ideas from FP can give one new and useful perspectives on how to solve some problems in Java. And it can also give one a better feeling for what Java's limitations are in that respect. Anyone can understand enough of the basics of FP and acquire the skill of reading an FP language like Haskell and start experimenting.
