JPA almost certainly needs to deal with SQLExceptions regardless of 
whether they are checked or not. Remember that, as you said, JPA can deal 
with non-SQL data sources. So, it follows that it *must* catch 
SQLExceptions, along with those thrown by any other data store it 
supports, to prevent them from being seen by JPA's callers which, by JPA's 
design neither know nor care what data store is being used. This in turn 
means that any SQLExceptions that can't be properly handled by JPA will 
be replaced by JPA exceptions and rethrown.
