Lots of frameworks do away with checked exceptions because they can't be 
abstracted prior to Java 8.

I'd not pay too much attention to what Oracle says.  Their Java money is 
from "enterprise" features so convoluted that you need to hire their 
consultants to use them.  I remember attending some Oracle tech talks 
where they're selling a new distributed server/monitoring/storage 
framework du jour that's as easy to set up as creating a hundred 
configuration files written in a proprietary XML structured language.

I've used frameworks that turn everything into RuntimeExceptions.  It's 
nice when you're in code that can't deal with exceptions.  It's hell 
when you're in code that must handle specific exceptions and you can't 
see what's coming or from where.
