Martin, no one is questioning the benefits of exceptions. They are known. What is being questioned is whether there should be *checked* exceptions or not. In my opinion, checked exceptions are a good thing as they represent alternative results for methods and force the user to consider all the potential outcomes. I think dividing them in "contingency" exceptions and "fault" exceptions, as Barry Ruzek suggests[*], is good to clarify how they should be designed and used.
