About the only case where I've found it useful is diagnosing SQL 
exceptions, but that applies regardless of whether the SQL client is 
Java, C or any other language.

The SQL specification states than in general the exception you get is the 
head of a chain of one or more exceptions and its frequently useful to 
look at the whole chain to understand when caused the SQL query to fail 
and why. If your client is written in C it the ODBC driver's error 
processor returns a diagnostic string for the exception at the head of 
the list and the next error code or zero. The processor is called 
repeatedly until the chain has been scanned. If the client is written in 
Java, JDBC throws the initial SQLexception , which contains a link to the 
next SQLexception or null. Again, you scan the chain until a null link is 
found. Following and displaying error text from the whole chain is so 
frequently useful that I tend to do it as a matter of course.
