This I know, but "newer" doesn't necessarily mean "modern" or as I like
to call it "Cutting Edge" like Arch Linux.  Even Fedora is not cutting
edge.

Mint has two code bases:  Ubuntu and Debian.  The Debian Edition
originally  used Debian Testing as its base and was a "rolling
release." And, yes, at that time Mint to Debian was more like Fedora
to Redhat, but since January 2015, IIRC, Mint Debian Edition is based
off Stable, currently Jessie. So, the analogy no longer applies.

17 incher?  I wouldn't consider anything bigger than 14".  But really
prefer the 11 to 12" range with a port to hook up an external monitor at
the very least.  Even 13 inchers are too big.  I'll leave the 17 inchers
to the young and foolish with strong backs. ;-)
