They don't pave under the turbines or mow the lawn. https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/turbine-colorado-wind-farm- collapses-burns-invenergy-clearway-clean-energy-fire/ Many of the fires don't include tower collapse but there are problems. https://www.windsystemsmag.com/turbines-and-fire-risk/ > Well you would be less than happy if you had had to drive on the 2 lane > predecessors of the freeways. Actually I like the blue highways. They can be hard to find in this state as I-90 followed the US 10 route. The E/W main drag in town is US 10 but it's mostly short stretches of frontage road. My brother was quite a bit older than me and moved to Seattle to work at Boeing. We drove there from upstate NY in '52 so I saw a lot of 2 lane. We went back on the southern route so I also saw most of Route 66. In later years there were still incomplete sections. In the '90s Wallace Idaho had the last red light on I-90. The narrow canyon required overpasses so you drove through town. Good business for the Bordello Museum. https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2949 There was also an unfinished section along the lake a Couer d'Alene. I-70 through Glenwood Canyon was still under construction in the early '90s too. From the 1930s you can find endless lines > of cars coming West from the dust bowl states to California where the > displaced were herded into camps for Texies, Oakies. and Arkies. I've run the Grapevine more times than I can remember, including when there was about an inch of snow and the Angelnos lost their minds completely. Then there was unique California Crazy. https://www.kvpr.org/arts-culture/2016-11-08/bakersfield-remembers- christos-umbrellas-25-years-later > Before the roads East to West were paved due to the need for smoother > roads for the people who could afford automobiles or motorcycles, the > railroads were the only way to get from one state to the next place you > might like. Otherwise you could set a record for distrance travel on > your motorbike or your fliver. You would have earned it too. Then there were horses and wagons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullan_Road You could call that the beta release of I-90 in this area. There is an area near Alberton MT where they couldn't follow the river and had to build a road over a 'Point of Rocks'. It took 5 weeks and was the hardest part of the whole road. it's a hiking trail now and while not extremely steep must have been a lot of fun in a wagon. The later railroad build a tunnel and made use of a lot of high explosives to get through. I-90 also blasted a shelf through. The original 10 was on the other side of the river but there wasn't room for 4 lanes. The point is, while people did travel, an extensive transportation network wasn't necessary before Eisenhower fell in love with the Autobahn. CocaCola was bottled in the local plant, not 2000 miles away. Maybe there weren't avocados in the grocery store year around or apples shipped in from Australia but there were local sources for the real needs.
