There were problems not related to blood sacrifices. The Hohokam had an 
extensive and sophisticated irrigation system in the Phoenix basin, 
diverting water from the Salt and Gila rivers. That works for a while 
until the soil salinity increases to the point where crops aren't 
possible. 

Chaco Canyon, like some areas in Africa, deforested the surrounding area 
out about 50 miles. While they built with stone they needed timber for the 
vigas as well as firewood.

There are different theories about the Mound Builders in the US Southeast 
but they were gone long before the Europeans arrived. 

Civilizations come and go and despite the claims the US is not exceptional 
although it might set a record for brevity.
