This takes me back to an editor I used on VMS, which would only write a 
new version of a file if you changed it.  Substitute line noise on a dumb 
terminal for 'cat tracks' or later on with Terminal windows and typing in 
the wrong window and you get the idea.

At least that editor would tell you that it was saving a new version, and 
with the VMS versioning system you knew which file to delete.
