Truth is that to me it's only mostly hideous.  The rest of my distaste 
for the 3D dock is that it's a lot less obvious which apps are running 
(the little indicator is very much less visible in 3D mode).  This was 
a bigger deal to me before I stripped nearly everything out of the dock 
except for the 5 or so apps that I use constantly.  Anything else, if 
it's in the dock, it's running.  Simple as that.  But I still think the 
faux 3D thing is pretty damned ugly.

Actually, the visual notion of the dock itself - identifying apps by 
icon without text - is kind of halfassed anyway.  At a glance, 
approximately half the icons on my dock just look like circles, some of 
them very similar in coloration, too (App Store, Safari, QuickTime, 
1Password).  Text might not be as pretty, but to me, especially since 
text can be easily sorted, it's much more practical.  An option to 
replace the dock's icons with text, or to add names, and to always have 
it sorted alphabetically, would be pretty slick.

Anyway, that's all just idle semi-ranting.  I'm just glad that I do 
have an alternative to the 3D dock and that it was easy enough to set 
up.  I don't mind if other folks like it.
