You'll note, I hope, that Secrets is two things - one is an online 
database of settings (take a look at the website) - and the other is a 
prefPane which lets you adjust those settings via GUI.

If you don't want to use a third-party app or prefPane, all those 
things at Secrets have the command-line to access them directly.

For example, to switch from the (hideous IMHO) 3-D dock to the 2-D 
dock, you do this:
   defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -float

If you just mean, wouldn't it be nice if Apple would just *document* 
this crap so we don't have to have sites like Secrets dig them up or 
have to find them and share them on Usenet, that much I'll certainly 
agree with you about.  I suspect some of this is scattered through 
Apple's developer documentation, but a nice central listing would be 
very helpful.

While it would be nice to have Apple provide GUI access to much of 
this, I can understand why they wouldn't, at least not by default.  
There are just too many possible options and Prefs would become 
hideously messy.  Maybe just an "advanced" panel or something would be 
good.
