Flash at least had its uses. In fact, it's somehow *still* the best
available solution for redistributable interactive multimedia content;
HTML5 took over its mainstream niche for embedded multimedia (read:
banner ads,) but it's non-trivial to redistribute a webpage the way you
can with an SWF (some of the browser-based choose-your-own-adventure
frameworks have more or less gotten it down, but HTML's limitation to
plaintext on the backend means that any embedded media has to be base-
64 encoded, which balloons file sizes by about 33%.)

Silverlight OTOH was never anything more than a blatant me-too on MS's
part; anyone could smell the impending vendor lock-in from a mile off.
