Much of the web development I've done was map based, usually with the Esri 
JaveScript API.

Try that site. If you view the page source the pure HTML boils down to 

<body>
<div id="map" style="width: 600px; height: 400px;"></div>
</body>

Everything else is done in the <script></script> block.  In lynx I get a 
black box except for the <title>Quick Start - Leaflet</title> block in 
<head></head>

It would be possible to create a static map in the backend and serve it up 
but you can kiss interaction goodbye.
