you don't need to do that if you don't make changes, but if you do make
changes, even if it's just accidentally (cat jumped on keyboard), those
changes get written.

exactly, and apple thinks there's more of the former than the latter.

lion auto-locks a file after 2 weeks, and for some truly bizarre
reason, the preference to change that is in the time machine system
preference, of all places.

having files mysteriously lock themselves confused people, so it was
removed in mountain lion.
