I just found something really stupid. I have an old cable router that 
I'm now using as a network switch, and it was set to the same address as 
the Netgear router I'm using for my network connection. So rather 
surprising that I haven't come across any problems before. Doah!!!!

Incidentally, I've only quite recently got around to configuring the IP 
settings on my 32bit box. Before I had just left things as default, and 
it did seem to be using DHCP by default, (as it was using 192.168.1.3, 
which was the next available address at the time). I discovered the 
networking problem while it was set up as default, using DHCP.

Interestingly the network configuration file didn't have anything in it 
except for the loopback settings. So presumably the system must have 
been getting the default DHCP setup from somewhere else.

Ermm...Pass...
I have not found any utility called network manager on the 32bit box. If 
it exists, I haven't found it yet. The graphical interface is rather 
basic, and there are very few settings available. For this reason I have 
been wondering whether it may be worth reinstalling everything from 
scratch and using the Gnome desktop, but perhaps 1st I should try to 
persevere with what I've got.

When I Initially installed the OS, I left all the networking as it was 
by default. When I discovered that I couldn't access the internet, I did 
look for network settings in the graphical desktop, and couldn't find 
any. So I just opened up a terminal window, and edited the network 
configuration files using the vi text editor.

Fair enough. But how do I find out whether I actually have Network 
Manager, and if so how do I get rid of it? Do I need to get rid of it?

I've set up my router to use addresses 1-50 for DHCP assignments. I 
thought 50 was ample. Only my laptop and my printer are setup to use 
DHCP. (My printer doesn't seem to work if I use a static address, buggy 
drivers I think).

I started at address 100 for my Squeezeboxes, currently I have 4 using 
100-103.

I started at address 200 for server devices, and I've stopped using the 
2 that used 200 and 201. My 64bit linux box was the next server I set 
up, so I used 202.

I started at 250 for network routers. I have a second router connected 
that I'm now only using as a network switch, it's an old Linksys cable 
router. OMG.. Doah, Just found out that that one is also set to address 
251. Now that would explain the problem, and I'm not sure why I haven't 
had any problems before. Right I've just changed it it 250, hopefully 
that should fix the problem.

I set my 32 bit box to 160 because at the time I couldn't remember 
whether my Squeezeboxes where starting a 100 or 150.

OK. I found that setting on my 64bit Box, I don't know how it got there 
but assumed one of the setup programs must have put it there for a 
reason. This is one of the few things about IP settings that I don't 
quite understand. I assumed it must be correct, and copied it to my 
32bit box. Perhaps I'll try commenting it out and then see if everything 
still works properly.
