OK I just tried closing the torrent client, and it didn't help. However 
un-plugging the network cable from my 64bit box did fix the problem. So 
it looks like it's something on that machine that is causing the 
problem. Not sure if I'll ever figure out why, it's all rather baffling. 
In case you are wondering, the IP address of the 64 bit machine is 
192.168.1.202. Incidentally I didn't want to try shutting down the 64 
bit machine as that is running my MythBackEnd, and it is currently 
recording (using a DVB-T stick, it's not using the internet to record).

Well this is still very strange, but at least I now have a work around.
