Thanks. that's interesting. However I think I've solved the problem now.

I think it was other things overloading my router. If I have only my 
32bit linux box connected to my router and then reset everything, then 
it works. I strongly suspect the torrent client on my other machine, 
perhaps it's using up all the routing tables in my router, or something 
like that. Althought why exactly this only affects one machine on my 
network is a bit or a mystery, but I won't worry about that now.
