For production systems we ship with the symbols stripped, when we get a core from a customer site we simply fire up a virtual with the right version of the system complete with symbols and sources and dive in to debug it. We keep ready to run images of every released version of the system and have plenty of resources to run up virtual systems. Yeah, we ship hardware and OS together so we don't have *that* problem - we have plenty of others to compensate though. > Wang had similar problems. Each workstation of each customer > ended up being unique and supported as such. There was no > updating to a common field image like we did. We keep a truly amazing number of images and symbol sets and of course can pull out the corresponding sources from version control for all of them, everything that has ever shipped for starters plus every build on the active branches and quite a few more. The only way we can be sure to be able to debug a core dump from any customer site is to be able to precisely reproduce their installed system and add the correct sources and symbols and that means keeping the images and symbols from the build that they have. I haven't checked but I suspect the build farm keeps everything and a cleaner process removes stuff with different policies for various branches and build types, that's how I'd do it. Oh, and BTW I've lost the spot in the thread where you were wondering about different versions of the file and different files with the same name in the debugger - but there are two parts to that, first the source file is identified by a relative path from the build directory which separates files of the same name, the second it's down to you the debugger to check out the right version of the sources or you will confues yourself horribly (don't ask me how I know OK). -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

We didn't have the luxury of being able to precisely reproduce a customer's system. We had bug fixes published; the customers did their own mods and the job mixes of each system would have been impossible to reproduce. It's a good thing disk capacities are infinite; we wouldn't have been able to do the build-branching you guys do today. Based on the stories I read here, it makes TOPS-10's SOUP seem like a breeze (which it wasn't). /BAH

Workloads and environments are a whole other problem, we can't reproduce those (nobody could - customers do amazingly strange things) the best we can hope for is to reproduce the salient bits and that takes a lot of resources. > > Oh, and BTW I've lost the spot in the thread where you were > > wondering about different versions of the file and different files with > > the same name in the debugger - but there are two parts to that, first > > the source file is identified by a relative path from the build > > directory which separates files of the same name, the second it's down > > to you the debugger to check out the right version of the sources or > > you will confues yourself horribly (don't ask me how I know OK). > > <GRIN> Ok, I won't ask but I smell a firefight story behind it. More a case of spending a couple of days spouting falsehoods about what the core dump implied in a high priority bug from a major customer before realising I was looking at a completely skewed view, I strongly dislike talking out of the wrong end of my alimentary canal. Firefighting is my main job. > It's a good thing disk capacities are infinite; we wouldn't have been > able to do the build-branching you guys do today. When it comes to diagnosing a customer's problem, I've learned that reproducing it is at least half the battle. That's why we love the various utilities now available that let us hook our screen and keyboard to the customer's machine (originally via modem, but now via the Internet). Then we can examine the customer's files and run tests on their own machine from the comfort of our office - and upload fixes if necessary. In cases where that's not possible (for physical or political reasons), there's still the old standby of running a canned job that takes copies of the customer's configuration files and having them to send it to us by whatever means available. As for version control, the first thing I try to do is update the failing program(s) to the latest version so we're on a level playing field. Sometimes the problem is one I've already fixed. -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. In which case it it important that your contract has some teeth too. For instance that all such support to versions that lag your update regime with more than N months (suitable for a corporate change policy, say 6 months) is exposed to serious time and material charges. At one PPOE we saved the company through such contracts. In one instance we had to babysit a machine 24x7x365 with senior engineers. It showed up to be gross negligence from the customer in their development. ISTR the invoice came to severeal million $ for that one alone. In such cases you can, indeed, cry all the way to the bank. And your reputation in the market remains pretty unsullied. Suits understand this language. -- mrr

That's when it's handy to get online access to their system, and test the existing software in situ. Unfortunately, customers who are that picky about change control also tend to be picky about remote access. If we track it down to configuration errors, we can tell the customer how to correct it. Our KA had 4 private RP04 disk drives. The KI had 4 RP06 private drives with one always being "down" for repairs. The KL had 6 plus the 2 front-end disk drives. Then the KL got the RP07 to do the monitor development and, later, the RA60/80 drive set ... again, for development. /BAH

This was a big thing during the 70s but seemed to diminish after D/ARPA separation disappeared. I also might not have been exposed to rigid security situations because the PDP-10 product line was phasing out. We did a similar thing. A firefight, by definition, is when everything has been tried and the second to last thing which can be done is to send in the bit god. > >> > >> > Firefighting is my main job. >> >> >> Do you like it? > > Yes, I've spent years designing and architecting and building, now > I'm getting to see some of the really creative ways people have of > stressing things and chase down the fine details that smooth the path for > them. It won't happen, the virtual machines are automatically reclaimed unless you try hard to hang on to them and if the usage starts creeping up to the point where capacity becomes a problem there will be a period of time when we are urged to go easy on the limited resources followed by a big purchase and a sudden expansion in resources - the time scale is such that this probably doesn't even involve increasing rack space just retiring old gear and replacing it with newer more powerful gear. I don't get to prowl the machine rooms these days - they're not much fun anyway these days just row upon row of 19" racks humming away. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

The tightest I've ever seen were at the datacenter for the largest certification authority back in the early 2000's. Three-factor authentication for data center access using biometrics, mantraps, no windows, heavy security.

W-e-e-e-e-e-lll. Occasionally, you have no choice, but they get very
closely supervised.

I got to touch the primary database cluster for my bank while in the room installing some hardware. It took months of security clearances to be able to get in there, and I had a minder near me at all times. As the installation was finished he asked "are you a customer of us", to which I said "yes", and was told that the closest thing to touching the money was to lay a hand on the main database cluster; which by random chance was the primary that day; right next to my installation. No accounts or console access, just physical contact. And with a ground strap attached. And with a minder less than a meter away. Anything that would have broken the cluster would have lead to instant failover to one of two remote sites; and uninterrupted operations there. >> > We keep the bit gods at home (where they can get at the tools) and >> > send people in to sooth feathers and act as hands and eyes - don't get >> > me wrong these people are also very good, just not the bit gods. >> >> We did a similar thing. (52U is 232 cm high). -- mrr

I worked in IT for one of the world's largest banks for 21 years. I
never got to go in the main EU data centre.
I did visit credit card operations and the banknote vault several
times. Once you get over the initial shock of seeing people moving
pallets of banknotes with fork-lift trucks, it becomes pretty "ho-hum".
