Would you need an emulator? MACE didn't have one. Instead it let you set breakpoints by temporarily replacing target opcodes with (IIRC) a software interrupt (SWI). Thus is neat because when a breakpoint is hit the program's state gets saved by the SWI where it can be inspected/ modified by the debugger and control switches to the debugger. The debugger's 'continue' command replaced the original instruction and issued an RTI (return from interrupt) which restored the program state and jumped to the restored instruction. Would something like this work with ARM code? BTW, the other nice feature of MACE was speed. It maintained the source you were developing in RAM for editing, saving and assembling. Assembly left the binary in RAM too (unless you asked for it to be written to disk), so even on a 2MHz 6809 both editing and assembly were very fast. Surprisingly, this put very few limits on program size since the in- memory source module could pull in other source from disk (this was assumed to be debugged so didn't have an in-RAM presence). I'd think an ARM assembler with this type of integrated editor and debugger could be an excellent teaching tool since it would be fast to use and would avoid the student having to learn much apart from its own edit/assemble/debug commands. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

ISTR that the PDP11 (35 years ago for me!!!!) had a bit in the processor status that would force a further debug SWI after 1 instruction.

The PI _IS_ an ARM implementation. It uses an arm6 processor. It can run
RiscOS, Linux, FreeBSD among other OSes.

The PDP-11 "load immediate" type of instruction just needed to load a register with the next 16-bit word pointed to by the PC. And this fell out of the addressing modes that apply to *most* all of the instructions. I'd think that the PDP-11 would be a good instruction set to learn first. It ... takes ... some ... people ... longer ....... to understand ... than ... others ....... I realized somewhere along the line that the IBM 360 use of literals and the literal table... was a substitute for *not* having a "load immediate" type of instruction on the IBM 360. Interesting... I found the 8080/Z80 chips clean and direct. Maybe
because my college mainframe was a Xerox Sigma 6 with its "LD" and "ST"
instructions (LD,<reg> <mem> vs ST,<reg> <mem> -- though <mem> 0..15 mapped
to the registers).

The 1900 only had two hardware registers, which held datum and limit addresses for the active program. Programs were a contiguous block of memory - task switching was done by changing datum and limit to point at the next program to run. Each program had its own register set because they were the first 8 words of each program, with word +8 being the PC and, since all addresses in a program were relative to datum, programs could be swapped in, out or moved in memory very simply. Motorola 6809 and 68xxx chips partly shared these characteristics: although the registers etc were a single set implemented in hardware, it was possible to write a program using only PC-relative addressing, so again it could be swapped in or out and moved in RAM by the OS between its active time slices. Microware's OS-9 operating system (it ran on both 6809 and 68xxx chips) could and did do this because all programs written for it used PC-relative or indirect addressing. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |
