One drawback to FORTH handling the Sun's booting, is that it
was dog slow. Not so much during booting, but if you got into
a situation where you tried to display a lot of data on the screen
and FORTH was in control, you could be waiting a long, long time.

Well, back in the 1970s and 1980s, many large employers of DP people
were far more restrictive. For instance, the large shops with
S/370 OS wanted that specific experience--S/370-DOS was not acceptable.
Further, some large employers wanted not only the above, but also
experience within their specific industry (e.g. manufacturing, banking,
retail, etc.)

Some of those employers were quite arrogant. The problem was that
they controlled a lot of jobs--a big company could have several
hundred programmers working for it in one location. Also, they
generally paid well.

(Smaller employers, and those using non IBM mainframes or DOS
mainframes weren't as fussy.)

Anyway, the employers explained that they wanted someone who could
jump in and be productive the first day; they didn't want to waste
time teaching someone about S/370 OS (e.g. OS JCL and utilities.)

While I think that expectation was unreasonable, it was a common
attitude in those days. I don't know about today, but last I heard,
employers can still be picking about a particular skill set. I
heard of one demanding experience in M/S's "dot-net framework".

A larger university, with tenured professors, can face a lot of
resistance in changing a curriculum. Back then, a technological
university offered several courses in FORTRAN. But there was demand
by employers for COBOL. They reluctantly began a course.

I understand that *sometimes*.

It depends on why I'm hiring how picky I will be -- when I'm in a tight
spot (let's say my lead programmer on an important project gets an offer
for ten times what I can afford to go to Google) I need to hire someone
*TODAY* who can hit the ground running *TOMORROW* ... I don't have the
luxury of even a single day of "This is kind of like what you're used
to, but not exactly ... " He (or she) has got to have recent production
experience with precisely the tool-chain the project uses.

When I'm hiring to merely expand resources, I'm very liberal -- as long
as you've got recent production experience in any of the "that's close
enough" technologies, the learning curve for being productive on any of
the others is pretty short.

You make it sound as though you hire hackers (in the old sense of the world)
because in any sizeable project, it takes time to understand that project
and all that goes to make it, and nobody can hit the ground running.

I was a consultant for 25 years, working in a lot of different sites.
It was normal to be submitting compiles the first day.
As long as someone can explain the issues, a few days should
be plenty.

If you haven't hired the right person, that person may never run.

I'd already plonked the lid from G4 but his universal declaration that
"nobody can hit the ground running" is the kind of statement that
demonstrates his idiocy.

My recent story was an actual recent story -- we lost a guy in the
middle of a project, to Google, and I hired someone in 24 hours that was
making productive changes within 30 hours.

Just because GARETH is not smart enough to "hit the ground running" does
not mean that nobody is.

Perhaps it is that you and your ilk have only worked on trivial systems,
the class into which most commercial data processing falls, but in complex
real-time systems, possibly safety critical, then your necessary learning
curve
takes much longer, especially when you have to assess the effects of your
proposed changes
on other parts of the system, where such an analysis before any editing may
take place can take several days, and must be fully documented in all the
design specifications before a single code edit can be made.

Taken against that formal methodology, commercial data processing is just
so much amateurish hacking where people can certainly start coding before
their systems-analysing brains are in gear.

Once again, you come across as a 5-year-old with your personal offensive
remarks.

Shame on you.

You are wrong. I worked with many, many people who always hit the ground
running. Most of the original DEC people had the ability. It requires
an objective thinking style such that any code written or bugs fixed
are made using the style of the original coder.

I have no idea of your hardware or application environment, but
we have found that even top-notch people take a few days to get
acclimated.

For instance, in the mainframe environment...

--learn the site nuances of the text editor, even if its TSO.
--learn the site and sub-unit nuances of the compiler proc or JCL.
The use of certain databases and/or CICS requires special options.
--learn the JCL to test a batch application, which includes site
  nuances and application nuances.
--To test an application that updates files, test files need to be
created, and site and application standards have to be explained.
--For online files, the CICS policies and system operation has to
be explained, as well as the CICS test system(s).
--Usually, the new person will have to work with other members of
the staff, be introduced, meet with them, and find out about
  coordinating whatever he is doing.
--Certain test tools may be unique to a site. For instance, one
site utilized an old package, DLY280, which is no longer well known.
Other 4GL's (Easytrieve, FOCUS, RAMIS, SAS, etc.), may be utilized in
  a system.
--There are several mainframe database management systems out there,
each with its own nuances, that a new person would have to learn.
There are also site nuances (as there are with CICS).
--Security for access has to be arranged and the new person made
  aware of security controls.
--In the event there is maintenance to an old mainframe system, often
it is not well documented and contains spaghetti code. Time is needed
for the new person to muddy through all that.
--While most mainframe applications are in COBOL, there may be some
unexpected assembler subroutines, which is a challenge if the programmer
  doesn't know assembler.
--The above applies to a programmer without any end-client interface.
However, many positions require some analysis and coordination with
the client; and a new person has to be set up on this as well.

And then there's the business acumen to know which approaches are viable
and which ones aren't, and when to pursue root cause and when to slap on
a band-aid and log it to look at in more detail later.

Of course they can. I knew quite a lot of people who could do that.
it takes a day or two to read the specs. If the project is in the
debugging phase, it's even easier to begin working.

Specs? What are these "specs"? The specs for a lot of the code I work
on have been MIA for decades. Everybody is sure they still exist,
somewhere in a huge off-site archive, but nobody is willing to fund the
archaeological expedition that would be necessary to locate them.

Back in my consulting days I was working on-site to redesign a 1401
system to something more modern. I dealt with a dysfunctional systems
analysis group operating under control of a user area. They often
bemoaned their lost specs. They went on and on about how great they
were.

So, not even looking for them, I wandered into a room right off the
computer room. Saw about 10 large filing cabinets so I took a look.
Yep, there they were.

The bulk of the stuff was in data dictionary format manually created.
Pointless really for designing a new process.

Getting back to losing stuff, I've seen very little stuff actually get
lost. Just people not looking in the right places. Most places I've
worked really don't throw stuff out. When they do, it goes to a
warehouse for years before it dies.
