The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that
English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. It not only borrows
words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages
down dark alleyways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets
    for new vocabulary.

I've heard English referred to as a "kleptolect".

If you'd like some more obvious examples;

If you know Portugese, you will understand most of Spanish. (but not the
other way around, I gather).
If you know Finnish, you will understand quite a bit of Estonian, and may
have some headway in learning Hungarian. This also does not go quite as well
in the opposite direction.
And my monther language, Norwegian; I understand almost all of Swedish, and
most of Danish. This also does not go quite as well in the opposite direction.
Although the famous joke is the dane shopkeeper who looks perpelxed at us,
and asked if anything was wrong asks "sorry, are you Swedes?" "No, Norwegians".
"oh, i thought for a moment I could understand Swedish".

Also, knowing Scandinavian, German and English makes written Dutch quite
understandable; but the spoken one is quite a bit harder.

Hungarian sure sounds like Finnish, but we Finns scarsely recognize a
word of it.

If you're looking for something resembling Finnish, you need Estonian.

A different story is that these languages should have gone the way of
dinosaurs aeons ago ...

If you know Estonian, you have a big head start in Finnish. Hungarian and Finnish
_are_ related, but it took linguists years of work to figure that out, so I would
be less optimistic in that case.

Exactly. The language isn't that important, neither is the syntax. It's
the paradigm. And there aren't that many...discounting the really weird
ones, and even they usually fit somewhere.

Yeah.

I can think one 'basic procedural' into which I'd put assembler COBOL,
BASIC and FORTRAN, 'Block structured procedural' which is the B BCPL C
PASCAL and so on family, then 'OO crap' which you all know, and then

FORTH. Language to the gods! (does any one else speak it?).

And I'd probably add a further category 'Right buggers muddle' and shove
PERL and shell in that.

And because its part OO, part basic procedural and part block
structured, JavaShite (TM).

The language for old HP calculator fans, but belongs to the write-only
langauges group.

I inherited Forth in a box of tapes for my old Spectrum in the 80s. It
was called White Lightning Forth and totally unlike Sinclair Basic that
it took ages for me to learn.
A very nice language but I never actually managed to get it to do
anything useful; I am unsure if that was a fault with me or the language
but I suspect the former.
I occasionally pop back into to it on different machines but I still
never manage to do much with it.

There was a variant of the Zilog Z8 microcontroller
that ran FORTH from the piggyback ROM.
Circuit Cellar's Micromint made a little systems with it.
